Comment on the correspondence by Cokol et al.

The correspondence by Cokol et al (2007) confirms a previous finding that some journals with a high impact factor (IF) publish more retractions than those with a low IF (Liu, 2006f). Their explanation is that high-IF journals receive more scrutiny from the scientific community, and that therefore more publications are identified as flawed and subsequently retracted. Equally, they argue, low-IF ...

Why Has the Number of Scientific Retractions Increased?

BACKGROUND The number of retracted scientific publications has risen sharply, but it is unclear whether this reflects an increase in publication of flawed articles or an increase in the rate at which flawed articles are withdrawn. The fraud and retraction epidemic.

A recent article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) examines the cause of retractions involving more than 2000 articles published in biomedical and life-science-related journals. 1 Of these, nearly 70% were retracted due to author misconduct, with the most common problem being suspected fraud (43.4%), followed by duplications and plagiarism. When compared with data obt...

Empirical developments in retraction.

This study provides current data on key questions about retraction of scientific articles. Findings confirm that the rate of retractions remains low but is increasing. The most commonly cited reason for retraction was research error or inability to reproduce results; the rate from research misconduct is an underestimate, since some retractions necessitated by research misconduct were reported a...

Why Growing Retractions Are (Mostly) a Good Sign

Retractions of scientific papers have recently been in the spotlight. Unfortunately, the interpretation of statistics about them is often flawed. The realisation that most retractions follow from scientific misconduct [1] seems to have reinforced, in the minds of both scientists and journalists, the idea that data on retractions, and generally data on findings of misconduct, provide information...
